Many veggies can be started from seed now for a yummy fall harvest. They will nicely fill in those gaps left from current harvests.

These plants have a maturity date of under 90 days and can withstand light frosts that may occur in October:

  • SeedlingBeet
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Collard greens
  • Kale
  • Kohlrabi
  • Radishes
  • Spinach
  • Swiss chard
  • Turnips

All these can be direct-seeded.

Here is a neat trick: After initial seeding and watering, put an old towel or burlap bag on top of the seeds. After 3-4 days, check under the towel daily and remove it when the seedlings emerge. This will keep you from constantly watering the seeds to give them the consistent moister needed to germinate.

Happy planting!
