Planting prairie from seed requires the removal of all turfgrass. Mary did not want to use chemicals to kill the grass so she simply covered it with cardboard and landscaping fabric for about 5 months. Once the grass was dead, we used metal rakes to get the area to bare soil. We then simply broadcasted the seed. The best time to broadcast prairie seed is in early winter around the time of the first snowfall.
