Recommended for adults and children ages 4 and up.
Pre-register by Sept. 13th to tag a butterfly.
$7.00 fee for tagging supplies and a Monarch butterfly.
There is no cost to attend the seminar, fee is to tag and release a butterfly.

Have you ever wondered how something as delicate as a butterfly travels over 1500 miles to Mexico? Participants in this event will learn how Monarchs are tagged, registered, and released so scientists can study and protect their migration routes. They will have an opportunity to tag a butterfly, receive a certificate with tracking codes and information on University of Kansas Monarch Watch program. This hands on presentation, is a great opportunity for all ages to learn about Monarchs, their habitat, lifecycle and amazing migration.

Kathleen Ziemer of Butterfliz of Iowa has been raising butterflies and leading educational seminars since 1999 and is returning for the sixth year to lead this event.

This is a great event for children and adults.
Last year at this event we had over 75 participants and were able to tag and release over 50 Monarchs.

This program will begin at 10:00 and lasts approximately one hour.
Tagging will take place from 9:30 to 10:00 then will continue after the program.
The butterfly release will follow the last tagging session.
This is an outdoor event with limited seating bring your chairs.
In the event of rain it will be held under shelter.

Red Fern Farm is offering a tour of its property. The farm sells a wide variety of nuts and fruits.

We will be showing off the chestnut trees during harvest time. You will get to see the nuts on the trees and ripe nuts falling to the ground. Feel free to try your hand out at harvesting chestnuts. We will also be talking about paw paws, persimmons, Asian pears, hazel nuts, and the newest craze: Aronia berries.

We plan for an afternoon of touring and talks. We start out at the house, under the carport, at 1:00 with handouts and a brief farm history. We then walk around the grounds near the house showing off and talking on paw paws, persimmons, Asian pears and hazels. Since we landscape with permaculture principles, the ground near our home is always interesting.

After the home ground tour we head over to the “Across–the-road” fields which are located 1/3 of a mile from our home. Feel free to walk or to drive the short distance. The fields contain two large plantings of Chinese chestnut. Also across the road is our 2.5 acre Aronia Berry planting. This Aronia Berry patch was planted during the summer of 2007. It is interplanted with paw paws, chestnut, black walnut, and heart nut.

We won’t be serving any lunch, but feel free to bring a picnic blanket and lunch and dine around our house or under the chestnut trees before the tour begins.

This JCLFA event is sponsored by ECO Iowa City. ECO Iowa City is a grant-funded initiative to improve environmental sustainability in Iowa City. Rowan Jacobsen writes about food, the environment, and the connections between the two. Whether visiting endangered oystermen in Louisiana or cacao-gathering tribes in the Bolivian Amazon, his subject is how to maintain a sense of place in a world of increasing placelessness. He is the multiple–James Beard award-winning author of A Geography of Oysters, Fruitless Fall, The Living Shore, and American Terroir.

The panel will include Kamyar Enshayan, Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Education at UNI; Diane Duncan-Goldsmith, ICCSD Food Services Director, Laura Krouse, local grower and supplier (Abbe Hills Farm), and Heather Widmayer, ICCSD Farm to School Coordinator. Participants will hear success stories about other Farm to School chapters in Iowa, learn about plans for the ICCSD Farm to School chapter, discover why it is beneficial to our students and find out how to get more involved.
